Texico Volleyball Takes Consolation in Moriarty

 

Texico Varsity Volleyball jumped into the 2018 season with a 2-1 start at the Moriarty invitational tournament.  The girl’s won their pool (5-1) which consisted of 2-sets against; Clovis, Moriarty and Hot Springs.  Placing first, put Texico in the Gold bracket with their first match against Los Alamos.   Texico struggled to get in system with their offense, dropping their first match of the season in 3 sets (11-25, 14-25, 22-25).   The team stated 12 kills, 3 blocks and 14 digs.  The loss moved the Lady Spikers into the consolation side of the bracket. 

 

On Saturday, Texico faced Capital, out of Santa Fe in the semi-finals.  The Wolverines came out strong, finding their rhythm offensively, charting 45 team kills, led by Kaitlyn Roderick (18) and Riley Thompson (13).  Baylee Sours and Macey Tharp combined for 39 assists, while Texico scored 10 service aces helping them to win in 5 sets (23-25, 25-12, 19-25, 25-22, 15-9).  Defensively, Texico had 82 digs (Jasmine Davalos- 29/Ashley Hill- 24) and 9 blocks (Thompson-4).

 

Texico’s win placed them in the consolation finals against Valencia who defeated Portales in 5 sets.  Continuing their cohesive play, Texico defeated Valencia (25-16, 26-24, 25-19) to finish 2-1 for the tournament.   Davalos and Hill combined for 40 defensive saves and  Roderick charted 4 blocks.  Offensively, Thompson (11) and Hill (7) led the team in kills.  Sours stated 19 assists and Davalos added 3 service aces.   Setter, Baylee Sours commented” We played some talented teams with good athletes this weekend.  I feel like we played hard and competed well”.   Middle attacker, Kaitlyn Roderick said “The tournament was a lot of fun.  We played our hearts out our last two matches, showing our Wolverine Pride.”
